A Note from the Match Director - Douglas Hewes re: the July Match: (for more info: douglas@hewes.net )
Shooters,
Yesterday we held our first IHMSA smallbore handgun silhouette match at Greenville Gun Club. The match went smoothly and everyone
had a good time. .22LR pistol silhouette is a new type of game for GGC – at least in the last 15 years. Shooters that endured the 90*+ heat
quickly learned that shooting those small steel targets out to 100 yards was not as easy as it sounded. Of course, this is what makes it fun
and challenging. There were 7 brave shooters that turned in official match score cards. Another half dozen tried their hand at some of the
new shooting positions to get a feel for the game. The match drew several shooters from the Pistol line to see what it was all about. Overall
for our first unadvertised match we had a great turnout and considered the match to be a success. I would like to thank Dennis H for all his
efforts in coordinating with the board and other volunteers that helped make this a reality. Also thanks to a long time IHMSA competitor,
Dwayne T, for making the drive to our range to help answer questions and demonstrate the techniques.
Considering this was the first match and most of the shooters were learning the rules and techniques as we went along, there were still
some outstanding results. Dennis H scored a 28/40 with his Thompson Contender and 2x scope from a Creedmore position while Shawn
R had a tremendous 24/40 from a STANDING position with his scoped Thompson Contender. Randy E also finished with a strong entry
from a standing position with his Ruger of 17/40 as a follow up to his 11/40 first entry. Corey N and his S&W K22 dropped 7/40 and 8/40 as
he learned the ropes. John S watched 3/40 targets fall over with his Buckmark with iron sights in his official entry…but after he started
playing with a few IHMSA prepped handguns on sighters – and doing very well - I have a feeling he will be back with different equipment in
the future.
Moving forward our matches will be scheduled on the third SUNDAY of each month. This may change later on, but due to demand for rifle
range time during prep for hunting season Saturdays were ruled out. Mark your calendars now for Sunday, August 17th, 8:30AM. As with
yesterday’s match, shooters do not need to arrive at the start of the match, nor stay the entire match. Each match entry (40 targets plus
sighters) takes about 45 minutes to shoot and shooters are encouraged to shoot as many gun categories as they like and time allows. For
$5 per entry you cannot beat the price! A few minor bugs – like welding issues on a few targets and adding some backdrop material to
increase contrast – will be taken care of for an even better match in August!
